Tomb of Maya queen discovered in Guatemala

Archaeologists in Guatemala have discovered the tomb of Lady K’abel, a seventh-century Maya Holy Snake Lord considered one of the great queens of Classic Maya civilization. The tomb was discovered during excavations of the Maya city of El Perú-Waka’ in Guatemala by a team of archaeologists led by Arts & Sciences’ David Freidel, PhD.

The Hold That Thought website debuted Oct. 1 to make in-depth faculty research and overarching ideas more accessible to the general public.

Medical school receives grant to enhance faculty career flexibility

The School of Medicine is one of five U.S. medical schools to receive a $250,000 Alfred P. Sloan Award for Faculty Career Flexibility. Diana Gray, MD, led the team that applied for and received the grant on behalf of WUSTL.

Rifkin offers vision of coming ‘third industrial revolution’ Oct. 11

International economic forecaster and social observer Jeremy Rifkin will talk about preparing for the “third industrial revolution” at noon Thursday, Oct. 11, in Graham Chapel. A book signing will precede the lecture.

Obituary: Commoner, ‘founder of modern ecology’ and former WUSTL biologist, 95

Barry Commoner, a WUSTL biologist from 1947-1981, died Sept. 30. He was 95. Commoner was “a founder of modern ecology and one of its most provocative thinkers and mobilizers in making environmentalism a people’s political cause,” according to The New York Times.

Public health conference to focus on 21st-century challenges

The Institute for Public Health will host its fifth annual conference, titled “Rising to the Challenge: Public Health in the 21st Century,” from 12:30-5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the Eric P. Newman Education Center on the Medical Campus. The keynote speaker is James S. Marks, MD, senior vice president and director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Women’s soccer wins UAA opener

Sophomore Anna Zambricki recorded the second hat trick of her career to lead the No. 11 women’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory in the University Athletic Association (UAA) conference opener at Carnegie Mellon Sept. 30. The shutout for WUSTL was its third-straight and fourth in the past five games. WUSTL continues conference play at home at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, against No. 1 Emory University.
